Mitigating Bias for Mental Health & Fitness

A bias all workplaces inherit from the wider social context is a stigma against mental health. At the Percipio Company, we partner with organizations to destigmatize mental health in workplace cultures and promote a greater sense of belonging.

Destigmatizing Mental Health & Fitness in Workplace Cultures

Today, the need for employers to invest in sustainable mental health care for employees is a business imperative. In a recent study, 76% of American workers reported experiencing anxiety, depression, or other symptoms of a mental health condition. 68% of millennials and 81% of Generation Z have left roles for mental health reasons.

Company Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programming must expand beyond the primary dimensions of identity (race, gender, culture, age). The best workplaces allow for every voice to be heard. For all employees to be seen.

A bias all workplaces inherit from the wider social context is a stigma against mental health. Mental health is too often associated with mental illness. If an employee is neurodiverse, needs a physical or mental accommodation, or even just an emotional check-in, they are too often viewed with suspicion and afraid to come forward.

At the Percipio Company, we partner with organizations to destigmatize mental health in workplace cultures and promote a greater sense of belonging. We redefine mental health to include psychological safety in everything we do. This is a core tenet of an inclusive organization. Our consulting engagements are not “one-and-done” training workshops. We combine coaching, consulting, workshops, process assessments and audits to design an employee engagement program that shifts company culture.

Our clients benefit from our ability to structure initiatives that are simultaneously provocative, personal, and productive. We take a self-reflective approach and move organizations from bias to belonging®.

What our diverse clients are saying…

We interviewed a handful of D&I consultants. Most had their ideas of what we needed.  I didn’t even know what we needed, so how could they? Everyone at Percipio has listened to our thoughts and ideas without judgment, treated our work with respect, and helped us build a sustainable roadmap around Diversity and Inclusion.  While the work is not finished, nor will it ever be, Matthew and his team have helped our team strengthen workplace relationships and leverage diversity into true inclusion, equity, and belonging.

The preparation with me and with the team was very effective. It helped me be better prepared for it, and helped me focus on what are we going to do with this and benefit from this DEIB investment. How can we utilize this to better the organization? The pre-work is what really made the difference. You go into it thinking it will be about one thing but it was more than just unconscious bias, it was about getting to know each other better. I would absolutely recommend organizations that are really considering delving into this work take a moment and speak to Matthew.

Michael Janis , CEO, SF Market

Partnering with Matthew to introduce Unconscious Bias to our executive team was a wonderful step in our company’s journey to becoming a better organization. He delivered the material in a way that helped us really look at ourselves while we looked at the biases that impact our daily actions – and our lives. He also managed to make what could feel like “tricky” conversations both eye-opening and positive. We are grateful for his time and attention.

Amy Steadman, SVP People Operations, ABD Insurance and Financial Services

Congratulations on a fantastic workshop! I’ve been a member of the Bar Association of San Francisco for years and this was the most enthusiastic feedback I’ve seen from an audience for a CLE!

The Percipio Company is masterful at making people feel comfortable enough to ask the hard questions and just as uncomfortable enough to know that the answers are going to cause them to re-think their own capabilities and look to how they can change and grow.

Matthew Cahill is a strategic and passionate Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) leader who is committed to helping individuals and organizations thrive. He has facilitated several impactful workshops and dialogs for the Humane Society of the United States philanthropy department’s major gifts team.

He most recently collaborated with us to develop and present a half-day session for a thirty-person philanthropy team retreat that included members of the department’s leadership as well as colleagues from the EU. Matthew brings calm to interactions that are emotionally charged, leaving participants with insight and a desire to learn more. I highly recommend Matthew and his team of trusted leaders and look forward to our continued collaboration.

In our partnership with the Percipio Company, we valued the chance to bridge connections among our global workforce of nearly 300. Guided by Matthew and his team, the focus groups and learning series laid essential groundwork for belonging. They also emphasized the importance of fostering equitable and inclusive practices and opportunities throughout our organization. Empowered by the experience, we have started implementing the shared principles into our organizational culture, and are already witnessing positive results.

“There’s no way our ‘Elimination of Bias’ goals can be achieved without first understanding the realities of our conditioned brains, and Matt & Sejal present this critical Implicit Bias material in an engaging fashion. I recommend their ‘If You Have a Brain, You Have Bias’ workshop to all law firms, or any other company that truly cares about Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.”
